This presentation will be a combination lecture and small group exercises to introduce models of handing difficult conversations. It is designed for anyone who is not familiar with the Crucial Conversations model. Other models will be discussed as time permits.

This presentation will be a combination lecture and small group exercises to introduce models of handing difficult conversations. It is designed for anyone who is not familiar with the Crucial Conversations model. Other models will be discussed as time permits.
Learning Objectives:
- Review models of communication for when conversations are difficult; focusing on the core model developed by the authors of Crucial Conversations.
- Learn how to recognize when conversations become unsafe and what to do about it.
- Learn how to bring a conversation back to safety.
Presenter Biography:
Barbara Beatty is currently the Ombuds at the Metropolitan State University of Denver where she serves faculty, staff, and students. Prior to this she was the Ombuds at the University of Idaho and Deputy Ombuds at the Texas Department of Public Safety. (if this happens--She is a newly elected Board member for IOA) and is also actively involved in the ABA Ombuds Committee. She received her Masters in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine University's Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution ten years ago and has been a part-time mediator over the past 30 years. She is also a Certified Trainer of Crucial Conversations and uses it often in teaching visitors communication strategies.
