Level: Established

As organizations become increasingly global and ombuds’ constituencies become increasingly diverse, ensuring adequate access to ombuds services and other services to which ombuds make referrals becomes increasingly challenging. Ombuds must be prepared to upgrade their programs so that all potential program users have full access to the the ombuds program and to other programs within the organization. This hands-on, interactive workshop will enable participants to work with new technologies and to explore how these can be used to enhance outreach and access for all, regardless of limitations such as language, physical access, cultural barriers, remote locations, or others.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the implications of U.S. federal requirements that require agencies and entities receiving federal funding (such as universities and research facilities) to provide physical and language access services and make reasonable accommodations.
  2. Identify common barriers for ombuds program users to access and effectively use ombuds services and other internal and external formal systems such as courts.
  3. See demonstrations of developing technologies and explore them through hands-on engagement, and gain knowledge of innovative solutions and methodologies.
