Description

In 2019 Amanda Dean, Reese Ramos, Tom Kosakowski, and Mark Patterson all relocated to open new ombuds offices. Each office, and each role, serves a different type of institution, a different demographic, and has been formed for different reasons. These varying experiences can provide great insight into the work of establishing an office and may provide established offices with new ideas and tools. Moderated by Roy Baroff, the panel will share their own experiences and lessons learned. Each panelist will also share resources created for their office, discuss how they work with leadership, what outreach strategies they have employed, and what the biggest challenges have been so far. The panel will also utilize technology, such as Slido, to solicit questions from attendees and allow them to have input into the direction of the conversation.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will learn how to address the challenges of creating an office as an outsider to the institution.
  2. Participants will gain tools used in creating a new academic ombuds office.
  3. Participants will learn how to draw upon the collaborative strength of the ombuds community.
