Managing boundaries is a critical skill through which ombuds are able to foster appropriate relationships with constituent groups and maintain impartiality as they address the needs of visitors. However, the unique challenges presented by the heightened sociopolitical tensions require greater attention to boundary management and more innovative strategies for effective practice. This session will help participants gain understanding about the factors that impact their ability to manage boundaries in periods of distress so they are better equipped to practice with integrity. The co-presenters will also facilitate a workshop in which participants will develop innovative strategies for managing boundaries in the midst of heightened sociopolitical tensions.

Learning Objectives

  1. Encourage participants to (re)examine the fundamental values that inform decision-making and role definition when managing boundaries in practice.
  2. Review boundary management as a core practice requisite for ombuds.
  3. Explore dynamic reflection as a central tenet of ombuds practice and a standard for managing boundaries.
